Kicking off today with a double burst of Tactics, firstly from Mark II on Waterfront and then what is the 3rd song on the "Long Weekend" ep released on the Folding Chair label from down in 'Berra in 1979.

Then we go all a bit "twangy" ( without the Ron Johnson ) with The Fall bangin' on about a State in Australia and Kiwi lads Toy Love with a single that at the time it came out I have to admit to not liking very much, as it was a follow up to Squeeze/Rebel which were both ace and not at all the manic hillbilly ranting of the Bride of Frankenstein ( and it's 2 songs on the flip ), turns out the band were less than impressed with their stint in the studio with Todd Hunter producing. Maybe we can blame "Todd". The song doesn't annoy me as much these days. ( Yes even though I didn't like the song I still bought the record - weird huh ).

I wish I knew more about Nicoletta to say something meaningful - other than the song seems to be ( in French ) about the 32nd of September..... and I can so connect this year with that notion, given that was in the thick of recovering from my head injury and anything was possible then !!

Some JD - mysteriously timely with the release in Australia of the movie "Control" ( loved it of course ) and then some "Hunnas" to end it all off, with the B-side/longer version of Talking To A Stranger known as "Our Version" ( ie the album version) the A-side being "Michaels Version" - a totally butchered and rankly edited version ( obviously because he freaked when he suddenly released they'd just recorded their whole first album with no "single" and no song under 7 minutes long !! ) ( oops )

All this back in the Greg Perano banging gas cylinders days - which I preferred to be honest. One night in the band's latter "blue singlet & beer romeo" days they were playing live someplace ( that escapes me ) in Sydney and Perano was between bands ( or had maybe just started the Deadly Hume, again can't quite remember ) and he was in the audience next to me sussing out his old mates and I couldn't let the oppurtunity pass to make a wise crack about how it "was better when you banging pots up on stage"...thankfully he took it in good humour, even if he was probably bemused someone recognised him. Mmm sorry about the vagueness there, that's one of those stories that are all a bit sketchy on precise details, which comes when you lose a bit of hair ( maybe that's where memories are stored - hair !! ...quick call NASA ) - and the afore mentioned head injury doesn't help the memory cause either !!

ok - grab 'em if you likee :)

Back to normal business and it's turned out to be a longish one today with Laurie and Echo taking more than the usual alloted time to ply their trade. Just as well it's not the 12" of Uncertain Smile or it could have gone on for hours !!

All very self evident I think, only thing I really need to say is The Close Lobsters never seem to disappoint, eh !

:)

#56, a variation in the formula

It's pretty much the same "random selection" concept but this time I stuck my hand in the 12" shelves and pulled out a chunk to see what happened & when the Rabbits Wedding Mini LP was first in the list ( after my last post pointing to the Rabbits Wedding single on ebay ) I knew it was my destiny to play the first 10 songs from this handful....so here we are. But pretty much a one off for the 12's otherwise if I start on them we could be here for a loooooooong time !! They were mostly singles but in the case of an album I had to forget the random factor and choose one track.

Starting with the song "Rideout" by Rabbits Wedding from the 'In Truth About Road' Mini Lp. as I said I got to choose this one ( for a change ), to start with how could I possibly go past a song featuring Juliet Ward ( Lighthouse Keepers/Widdershins ) on backing vocals ? Rideout is also one of those songs in my life I have never been able to listen to just the once when it goes on, usually requiring at least 2 or 3 plays per sitting ( yep - "rewind Selectaaaa" ). Another song which has this honour in my house is "About The Weather" by Magazine.

The Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes track is from the 12 of "You'll Never Be That Young Again". The Beloved song was a single ( which sadly I don't have and ergo it wouldn't normally potentially pop up on a post here by normal means ) and in this instance is on a 1986 comp called "A Different Kind Of Tension" ( featuring other luminaries 'of the day' as The Wolfhounds, The Wedding Present, Soup Dragons, 1000 Violins, Might Lemon Drops, Soup Dragons, Stump, June Brides and The Shamen ). The Decline of The Reptiles track comes from their "The Hammer Speaks" Mini Lp.

Troy Tate is from a 10 inch 3-tracker ( with the appropriate amount of distance between him and Moz's boys at the end ). Johanna Pigott's song comes from the "The Nine O'Clock Muse' comp, which featured recordings made for an All Aussie Adventure "live" series on 2JJJ.

And finally of note dear old Moz - what is in fact the B-side...not bad chops to have "How Soon is Now' as a mere flipside, huh ??

Lobby Lloyde's back again - in both the producer and engineer's seat this time with what was a "double A" from Sardine v, I'm playing "Sabotage" today, whereas the other side Sudan has gotten a run on a few comps.

A few other Aussie bands as well - The Swinging Moods and Glo Ratio from Sydney, the latter being the main band of "Mark Two" who put out a few solo cassettes at the time, on a more electronic-pop tip, one of them was called "B-Songs" ( the one with the blue cover ) and another one with a dark red cover whose name escapes me right now - and an impossible task to go through the umpteen boxes of cassettes I have and come out alive. If you think my vinyl is in a mess you should see the cassettes. Anyway 'Video" by Glo Ratio a kind of "anti-technology" song of the time, about the woes of the VCR and how it will ruin the world. While I had a chuckle hearing Swinging Moods mention how they "ride the ESR" and how fast it is. For people in Sydney, yes the Eastern Suburbs Railway. Told you it was funny.

anyhooow.....please enjoy :)
