#34 it's a small world indeed

It's definitely a cliche ( or as they say in French a "cliche" ) but sometimes it is a small world. I got an email the other day from the son of Barry Ross ( loyal sidekick to Rex Mossop, see # 30), and he somehow stumbled on this site, only to read my post about his father and Rex. He did say he was laughing, which is good and said as a boy he spent many a fine time with his dad and Rex at the footy, and that there are still "get togethers" with Baz and The Moose. Great to hear, and thanks for writing !!

Today we have a record I have always been suspicious as to it's authenticity as an "official release", ie a Jasmine Minks "live ep", I suspect a bootleg, recorded in Nov 1986, from right up the back of the pub and appearing on a dodgy sounding label "Esurient Communications" which sounds possibly French, or maybe was just meant to sound French to put Alan McGee off the scent from chasing the label down and giving them a Glasgow kiss ( ?? )

The Jam ep is quite a nifty little 4-track thing with Start, Eton Rifles, That's Entertainment and Going Underground, some nice one stop Jam shopping. The Go-Betweens single looks like it could be more "unofficial merchandise" like the Jasmine Minks but it's a double sided giveaway single from a Melbourne record shop "Music Station Records", the other side being a track by a melbourne band called Empire State, doing a song called Hey Mista.

#33 - a tale of root vegetables

There's been a bit of a time gap here because I was trying to somehow "clean up" the single by Blue Aeroplanes, there's a part in the middle that suddenly sounds like your ears are full of mashed potato, but don't worry the potato comes out your other ear eventually and it clears up. This has held up "production" as I was trying to stick my own rules that I enforced from day 1 to play the single no matter what in the order I pick them up, so couldn't really skip a track now could I, huh.

This little "potato moment" on the Blue Aeroplanes was dogging me for over a week - I was trying desperately to clean it up digitally somehow and concluded not even a forensic audio scientist at the FBI could do it !! This was even after an 'analog cleaning' done on a professional 'record cleaning machine' at a radio station a friend works at. In the end I have grown used to the whole vegetableness of it and have admitted defeat.

But anyhoooooow, also today we have Frank Tovey as a "solo project" supposedly apart from Fad Gadget, Gedgy's back and full force with The Wedding Present and the original/first version of "Throw Your Arms Around Me". A revamped version appeared a few years later after with a new 2nd verse added, all supposedly to appease the US market, but here we have the rawer version that obviously Aussies would put up with.

Some more Railway Children follows, then the afore mentioned Potato song, then a rather fetching looking French lass, from a collection of singles from "other countries" I picked up one fateful afternoon in a secondhand store, which have been scattered here and there on the mixes on this blog.

The Chad's Tree track is the b-side of "Stroller In The Attic" and there was something I found a bit "overworked" in the production of the a-side, so opted for the flipside. After which we have some rather drunken sounding Scottish lads ( hey I'm not knocking it, just commenting ) called We Free Kings, who seem to be having a rollicking old time, spurred on by some mad fiddling...again, not knocking, just an observation.

Finally I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Sir Roddy for Aztec Camera, my number 2 fave AC song behind "Oblivious". Ending today with Lord Cope and the Liverpudlian lads in big brass fashion.

In other business the old email address at chilli.net.au seems to have died an inglorious death, so I have listed a new email address. Before the chilli thing went under I had a great message from Richard who was the drummer in The Holidaymakers ( makers of the awesome Cincinatti single, which fronted on pod #2 ) who is now working in Canada as a paramedic. He also said he's having trouble convincing people he knows over there he was in band !! Hey Richard's friends, I can confirm he was in The Holidaymakers and also that they had a absolutely great single in Cincinatti :)

A few other people were asking how come all the singles on this blog are mostly 80's and the answer is simple - these are the ones all stored in the so called "sideroom". Recent singles are in a totally different room, and that's kind of why I started one of my other blogs called Humans Beware, which has recent stuff on it. Incidentally at that blog I've just done an "electro pop" thing featuring ( mostly Swedish ) recent "electronic pop" sounding stuff. Check it out if you so desire :)

#32 today, flipsideroom up and running

Firstly I have finally given into the requests and started the "flipsideroom" which is the bsides/other sides of all the singles featured here. This was something people kept asking me from day one and now...well I've started, so hope you enjoy that as well. I've only done one but it's a start, going back to "flip over" podcast#1 from way back in November...check it out here ;)

I have also just started another thing centred around music from the Australian Post Punk scene in the early 80's called Impaneema Mon Amour, which if you're interested you can visit here.

Meanwhile back here, today we start with some more Rosehips, followed by the Rainy Day collaboration which from memory was members of the Dream Syndicate and the Rain Parade in a side project, and the single today is a Dylan cover sung by Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles. Followed closely by the BMX Bandits, speaking of Soup Dragons offhsoots, which we weren't !

Next Mr Mark E Smith is back extolling the anti-virtues of a Creep, well before Radiohead that is ( when they announced Damien Leith would be singing Creep on Australian Idol this year I was secretly hoping it was The Fall song..but alas...though never too late Damo ).

Scribble was the 2nd band of Johanna Piggott ( after XL Capris ) and I really enjoyed Silly Girl today for some reason. The Monkees were fun too and The Unstrung Harp were a Melbourne band and this is a great single, and also stylistically worthy of an appearance of the afore mentioned Impaneema Mon Amour.

podcast #30 - for Rex & Barry

Most people probably associate Isaac Hayes and "The Theme From Shaft" with the movie of the same name but I am sure there are people like me who lived in Sydney in the mid 1970's that think of it as "The Theme From Seven's Big League", a story of quite a different ilk to the movie Shaft. And with a very different "star" to the movie - the inimitable Rex "The Moose" Mossop, outspoken and blathering host/commentator of ATN-7's Rugby League coverage, ably assisted on "sideline comments" by the mysterious Barry Ross, a more than capable lieutenant to Rex, even if we rarely saw his face. These memories came flooding back when Isaac Hayes showed up in the pile today, making me a little concerned that Rex and Barry aren't so far away in my mind after all...gulp...

Rex aside, today we have a very Australian flavour, starting with The Bedsitting Room from Melbourne, apparantely a bunch of ex Scottish lads who skipped Glasgow and settled by The Yarra sometime around 1985. This is another single with a series of stickers with manic comments of adoration written in textas of various colours, I suspect penned by Simon of the Hummingirds whilst working at Phantom Recs ( see my earlier comments re The Armoury Show from podcast 16 ).

Then Gangajang with their most famous tune "Sounds Of Then" and I'm amazed that no Riptides have shown up at all yet on this blog....percentages are, they have to soon though....their records are lurking in the piles somewhere.

Then we hear from Tactics and a slightly "remixed" ( at the time ) version for 7" of Second Language which appeared on their first album My Houdini. A Tactics double CD comp has come out recently, an anthology type thing. Vol 1 is from the 1st incarnation of the band, the My Houdini/Glebe/Bones of Barry Harrison era...good stuff except - be warned - the songs from Glebe are totally remixed from the original mixes released on the vinyl album in 1981 and well...quite shite "new mixes" actually. Annoyed me so much I have posted the "real" Glebe album on my other blog Humans Beware. A piece of anarchy from me because it's just not right that they remixed the songs for the CD comp !! Also check there for news of a "blog co-prodcution" with the excellent "They Called it Good At the Time" blog who are possibly posting My Houdini soon, which sounds like a great idea to me !!

Other People's Children is of course another Jason Sweeney/Sweet William project.

& to be totally honest I can't remember much about The Whipper Snappers, but obviously bought the record and today I didn't mind hearing it again. Probably it's a bit more overproduced than a lot of the other bands I was listening to at the time and to me it's obvious that they recorded it in more expensive studio - EMI 301, which takes a bit of the rawness away.

The Yapocks were an offshoot band of the bass player Snajik from the 2nd incarnation of Tactics. I am guessing this period of Tactics is what will be featured on the 2nd anthology of their music. whenever that comes out !!

We end with The Agents, featuring the voice and "writing" of James Griffin who was working at the time at 2JJ...yes Double Jay kiddies, well before the 3 Jay's...and clearly used government/ABC facilities to record his band's debut single, but hell why not, I would have if I was him !! He has subsequently gone on to become an author and broadcaster on ABC-TV. At the time of "Suburb's Of The Heart" I suppose he was Sydney's answer to John Cooper Clarke and the record is James' little commentary on life in the suburbs of Australia. Back then I thought it was an incredible apt and scathing representation of the ills of modern society. But then again I was busy recovering from/rebelling against Rex Mossop at the time. Him and Barry Ross !

Well what looks like another ragtag bunch here today..but appearances can be deceptive..

Starting out with a tale in full Scottish brogue, which ya gotta love, from the bside of what looks like the first single from Vagus Nerve, followed by The Archies of all people, something I got 2nd hand sometime, I love the end of it because the stripped back bongo vibe is something like Andrew Weatherall with Primal Scream !

Later we get into the first single from Not Drowning, Waving in the good old days when it was just Bridie & Phillips + a drum machine - before the band became over the top and had more members than a football side and included half of Papua New Guinea in the lineup !! I still recall the exact moment first hearing this song in my childhood bedroom on 2JJJ as played by the legendary Peter Doyle - on ya Doyley old fella :)

Some people have had trouble d'loading from Box.net....sorry about that....I think that's because I went over my allowed bandwidth there for downloads...it should all be OK now ;)

The other thing that's come to light is how bad my memory must be. I recently, as in the last month, bought a copy of The Clientele "Since K Got Over Me"...only to be shocked to discover today when making this that I already had a copy. Yep hidden in the infamous pile of records. Funny...must be that 2005 memory blackout of mine back to haunt me. Oh well, now I've got 2 copies ;).

podcast #27...a day of collaborations

Firstly you can no doubt see that's not the "official sleeve cover" for Christine by Siouxsie & The Banshees !! Yeah I got it second hand somewhere one fine day..

Seems to be a lot of people either collaborating or playing on other people's records today... The Horizontalist is the Mary Hansen + friends from Stereolab/High Llamas joint effort ( on Mary's own label I believe ). The Go-Betweens used the piano/ivory services of Dan Wallace Crabbe ( most notably of The Laughing Clowns ). Chad's Tree roped in Amanda Brown for a bit of violin, from memory just before she'd joined The Go-Betweens and after she'd left The Lucky Dinosaurs ( aaaah now there's a name from my past !! ). And finally the incarnation here of Ya Ya Choral has Chris Morrow formerly of The Numbers on board.

I'm also experimenting with putting the times of the songs here as well...hope this helps ??

Seems though I have a hundred Primitives singles because they keep appearing at a regular rate !

The Z-Cars ( not to be confused with the z-Scars from Latvia ! ) were a Melbourne band who the ravages of time have blurred my memory on totally. The Gist is of course Stuart Moxham ( and his brother Phillip ) who was also in Weekend.

If you look at the comments for this post a few people have made some great suggestions re the podcasts and being able to indentify the songs more easily, I'm seeing what I can come up with and will get back to you on that.

wow I made it to podcast #25 !

Firstly to the girls in Houston, Texas who wrote to me and said they had a "sideroom singles all day party on the weekend" - oh my god !! that is so side splittingly funny !! Glad you had a fun day and it is making me laugh my head off !!

It's also highly "raisonable" of you but then my knowledge of French is limited to David Gedge of The Wedding Present's impressive bi-lingual skills in putting out "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now" in the French version that appears here today as "Cadeau De Marriage". I'm sure I have the English 7" somewhere and that'll probably show up one today.

Something a little 'un-raisonable' is the slight ribbing they gave Vini Reilly of the Durutti Column in the movie 24 Hour Party People...poor old Vini !! Anyway Vini's on board today with the legendary Sketch For Summer.

The band The Products were from Sydney and an offshoot band of Fabian Byrne who was a member of Fast Cars who were on podcast#13 with Saturday's Girl. And bizzarely Echo & The Bunnymen showed up 8th again like last time...spooky !! And sometimes I don't really know exactly what it is Mark E Smith of The Fall is on about but I've always loved the strange little tale contained in Lie Dream of A Casino Soul.
