#51 Biff Bang McGee...

Starting off today with The Killjoys from Melbourne, who I've previously had a little rave about ( and played a few tracks ) on Humans Beware. It's a great little single here called "Fall Around Me", back "in the day" I always thought they were a fantastic band and the single popping up today just re-affirmed that.

Then we're off onto a triple play from The Sunnyboys and probably the first time we have a case of me actually having had placed the records in some kind of logical order whenever it was I originally stored these records - ie by band - but don't count on that being a regular occurence. I've had several earlier sprays about the Sunnyboys and what I think about the veracity of anyone else other than Lobby Loyde producing them and won't go over old ground again !! Also I had a bellyache about which version was the original Alone With You , which today's isn't of course...

Then we're up to Brisbane for The Lemon Fabs, over to one of Moz's old mates's Stephen Street having a go at making Jill Birt into a sex symbol with a single from The Triffid's Black Swan album. After this it's Yazoo and I guess the concept these days would be more something like not wanting just to end up only as friend on Facebook/myspace rather than a "page in diary".

And then me old mate David Gedge is back - yes with another song about a chick leaving - but that's also old ground. It's from a ep ( possibly a giveaway ?? ) for a pub in Sheffield called The Leadmill. At the time of the record it was an "exclusive/unreleased" effort by The Wedding Present, but I'm sure that's no longer the case.

After which we hear from a band called The Creation doing a song called Biff Bang Pow...wow is there any doubt as to whether or not Alan McGee liked this song ??

Wrapping up with Sir Edmund K, incidentally mixed by David Nicholas.

whatcha waiting for - go get it :)

#50, cracking the half century !!

Happy to say track#500 is the Ups & Downs !!

Also of note today is a Church double A-side pack, the main song ( for want of a better term ) was "Too Fast For You", but today I chose the A-side to the second single "Tear It All Away".

I must confess to not knowing much about Dangerous Birds other than they were an all girl group from Allston, MA in The States.

The Hoodoo Gurus version here is actually the re-issue on Big Time as opposed to the original Phantom 7, which is lurking around in the piles someplace and may pop up on it's own.

Other than that not much to report other than my cat is not well and that's preoccupying my mind a bit.

So enjoy today's big 5-0 mix :)

#48 & #49, a double

A double today, the second one an all Australian batch...as we are closing in quickly on the half century !!

To start with - #48

Firstly we have The Motivaters, a Sydney band on Result Records ( along with label-mates The Jukes and The Eighty-Eights ), then a b-side to the Weather Prophets "She Comes From The Rain" single, the a-side woefully overproduced and boring ( as a result of the band's move from Creation 'proper' ). at least the b was produced by Pete Astor 'imself and is worthy of a play today ( even with the jump/scratch ).

Then some Dexy's - don't worry I've never been able to figure what the blazes he's singing about either !! After which it's the Sunday Painters from Wollongong with a snide little dig at the music scene of the time, some Wonder Stuff and the Bambi Slam. I can't remember what label they were on and can't work it out due to the cover art using the most ridiculously flowery font combined with the most wretched colour scheme. If anyone knows what label it's on could you please let me know !

Jimmy Fontana then does an all Italian version of "Happy Together" and then Icehouse way back in THE day when they were called Flowers and we wrap up with the Haircutters and Mighty Mighty.

The details on the 2nd one for today below, but meantime grab this one here -

& now it's #49, a total Australian 10 again

And all from roughly the same year, and I suspect they ended up in the pile in this order because way way way back in time I would have had the records in some logical order ( not so any more ) and I guess they've stayed in that order through the various house moves I've done over the years. A special mention here to "Geoff's Record Bar" in St Marys which is where I would have bought 9 of the 10 records ( except The Flying Calvittos ). I suspect I may be the first person in history to mention "Geoff's Record Bar" on the internet !!!!!!!!!

We also encounter a few representatives from the Parole label ( a Festival offshoot ) with The Elks ( from Perth featuring Terry Serio who went on to be better known as an actor in Australia ), and Street Level who I think may have really been a Sydney band ( forgotten - help anyone ?? ). We heard earlier from the Parole when the Perth band Boys cropped up on #40.

We also have a few Peter Dawkins productions, he of Dragon & Mi-Sex production fame ( just to name a few ) in the guise of MEO 245's 3rd single and Outline's first "major label" single ( after the infamous 'Cicadas...' that is ! ) and a few things about Cities makes me laugh, firstly the weird funky disco Born To Be Alive middle eight and the Mi-Sex keyboard patch. Also Cities is on CBS ( 'proper' ) and then the next single ( 'How Can I get Out' ) is on Powderworks...what gives ??

Speaking of Powerworks they also give us today The Breakers single, produced by Jimmy Manzie and while we're on 'producers' I can't go past mentioning David Tickle again, as he produced The Aliens single ( which I'd forgotten ) and I bet he doesn't normally mention this ( given he apparentely went from Wunderkind to Wanker after producing True Colours by all accounts) ( and as far as I can 'date it' this Aliens single was produced around the time of True Colours ).

I'd also love to make a c-c-c-connection between The Aliens singing C-c-c-confrontation and Vixen singing C-c-c-cover Up Job !! Only in that they both felt like s-s-s-stuttering during the c-c-c-chorus !! Vixen were a Sydney band and came out on the "Alternative" label ( another Festival offshoot ), the label which first released "Living China Doll" as heard way way back on podcast #1.

Finally I had a big struggle deciding which Flying Calvittos song to put on - torn between Mamma's Table and Lucky To Be Australian...the latter losing out in the end, although it will eventually show up on the flipsides blog of course. The Atla single was a Todd Hunter production ( aided by Spencer Lee ) and The Eyes single was their first, to be followed by 2 more and an album and then they disappered totally !! ( and released on yet another small Festival sub label "ATA" ).

So here's #49 and see you soon for the 50th :)

#47, for all the Shopfitters

For about half an afternoon back in 1986 after I'd first read about The Smiths "Shoplifters" single in an NME I had it in my head it was called "Shopfitters Of the World Unite" and until a friend laughed at me and pointed out the correct song title ( later that day ) I thought ( having not even heard the single at that point ) that Moz was off on some rant about people who dress up shop windows in department stores. Aah the great unwritten Moz epic.

With the Isrealites single I must confess buying this after I heard Patrick Gibson warbling away on the Systematics version !

The Young Docteurs were from Canberra and the song featured today is from a 3 track ep they had, a song which often featured on Shane Collier's Saturday show on 2SER-FM in Sydney in the early 80's. A show of great influence to my musical tastes I must add.

The Blue Nile single is actaully from a double pack, the "main single" in the pack being "Stay" but I always preferred Tinseltown...not that Stay is bollocks mind you, just I could only play one.

The Models 7 is a UK release of this song, which of course features Mark Ferrie on vocals but thankfully Sean Kelly pops up in the chorus !!

enjoy :)
