#66 - Strange Linguaphile

A very "wordy" bunch of songs today - not like the lovesick/forelorn lyrics of your average jangly pop c86 tinged classic...no. none of that today.

So how often do you use the words 'anglophile' and 'sericulture' in everyday life?? Give it a go !!

#63

Back on the trail of the 7's today and kicking off with a 1988 re-issue on 7" of Atmosphere ( nah I'm not gonna claim I've got the Sordide Sentimental version ) and a few Chameleons productions ( the version of Touch is an Italian release and seems like a slightly different edit or am I imagining again ?? ). Skin is a sub-band of Swans ( as clearly pointed out on the sticker kindly provided in the record shop I bought it from ). And I guess the only other thing I wanna point out is sadly there's an un-saveable scratch on Walls. Ah well :)

#62, flipsides update and briefly back to the 12's

Every now & then I pull my finger out and do an update at the flipsides page - now is one of those times...

Then for today I decided to pay another visit to the 12's, given last time it went down so well. The only advance on last time is then I said it was a "one off" but I've upsized that concept to one of "every now and then" for reachin' into the 12's and picking a random 10 - and again now is one of those times...

Plenty plenty more 7's to come though :)

#61....made it through a year !!

Today is the first anniversary of this blog and it's been an eventful year and glad to have made it this far !!

A few flexis today ( Magic Shop & Strawberry Story ) and one that sounds like a fexi but isn't ( Bugbear ) but sounds like it was recorded on a very low budget cassette ( Sweda perhaps ?? )...Bugbear featuring Amelia & Matthew Fletcher...and Amelia "doesn't wanna be a sea monkey"

A few from Orange Juice in there as well, including a latter day Postcard single from the lads. The 14 Iced Bears single is from a reissue on Slumberland ( sadly can't claim having the original single of 'Inside" in that wild pink & crimson lollybag cover - boohoo ).

By the way looks like I'm about 1/2 way through the singles...yes folks it will end one day...not soon but one day...though my new motto in life is "it doesn't have to turn out badly", so meantime enjoy :)

first up next week - James Dean Driving Experience ( OOOOH YEAH )

#59, getting close the 1 year anniversary

Just 2 weeks away from the first anniversary of this blog !

The Field Mice starting today with September's Not So Far Away, well it's not far enough away for me as that when I had my accident and in some regards still paying for it. On the other hand it's a great song by The Field Mice, even if it is a tad too close to the bone for me, don't let that stop you enjoying it, huh.

We've had "Out Of Reach" by The Primitives before ( #11 ) but this not only different packaging, a so called "limited edition" but I swear the mix is different, or is that just an auditory illusion ?? This one's probably the album version is my wild hypothesis but don't quote me on that.

The only other things I really need to point out are - the Heavenly track is from a split 7 with Bis and The Traitors were a Sydney band, other than this single I didn't ever know much about them. Only that the "lead guitar" work gave me a bit of a giggle today.

here ya go...

245T Live radio

( Sideroom ) 245T Live radio is in a serious testing phase, there's a schedule of upcoming broadcasts on the blog for the station and how to tune in. We're setting up the studio & getting together a group of like-minded broadcasters, initially as a "weekend only" live stream and taking it from there.

If you like, please tune in at some point :)

#58

Kicking off today with a double burst of Tactics, firstly from Mark II on Waterfront and then what is the 3rd song on the "Long Weekend" ep released on the Folding Chair label from down in 'Berra in 1979.

Then we go all a bit "twangy" ( without the Ron Johnson ) with The Fall bangin' on about a State in Australia and Kiwi lads Toy Love with a single that at the time it came out I have to admit to not liking very much, as it was a follow up to Squeeze/Rebel which were both ace and not at all the manic hillbilly ranting of the Bride of Frankenstein ( and it's 2 songs on the flip ), turns out the band were less than impressed with their stint in the studio with Todd Hunter producing. Maybe we can blame "Todd". The song doesn't annoy me as much these days. ( Yes even though I didn't like the song I still bought the record - weird huh ).

I wish I knew more about Nicoletta to say something meaningful - other than the song seems to be ( in French ) about the 32nd of September..... and I can so connect this year with that notion, given that was in the thick of recovering from my head injury and anything was possible then !!

Some JD - mysteriously timely with the release in Australia of the movie "Control" ( loved it of course ) and then some "Hunnas" to end it all off, with the B-side/longer version of Talking To A Stranger known as "Our Version" ( ie the album version) the A-side being "Michaels Version" - a totally butchered and rankly edited version ( obviously because he freaked when he suddenly released they'd just recorded their whole first album with no "single" and no song under 7 minutes long !! ) ( oops )

All this back in the Greg Perano banging gas cylinders days - which I preferred to be honest. One night in the band's latter "blue singlet & beer romeo" days they were playing live someplace ( that escapes me ) in Sydney and Perano was between bands ( or had maybe just started the Deadly Hume, again can't quite remember ) and he was in the audience next to me sussing out his old mates and I couldn't let the oppurtunity pass to make a wise crack about how it "was better when you banging pots up on stage"...thankfully he took it in good humour, even if he was probably bemused someone recognised him. Mmm sorry about the vagueness there, that's one of those stories that are all a bit sketchy on precise details, which comes when you lose a bit of hair ( maybe that's where memories are stored - hair !! ...quick call NASA ) - and the afore mentioned head injury doesn't help the memory cause either !!

ok - grab 'em if you likee :)

Back to normal business and it's turned out to be a longish one today with Laurie and Echo taking more than the usual alloted time to ply their trade. Just as well it's not the 12" of Uncertain Smile or it could have gone on for hours !!

All very self evident I think, only thing I really need to say is The Close Lobsters never seem to disappoint, eh !
